Saturn Retrograde in Pisces
Saturn Retrograde in Pisces

Saturn is not the enemy of progress; instead, he is the master of time, karma, and integration. Known as Shani in Vedic mythology, Saturn is the slow-burning forge of destiny. Known to reward the disciplined, when retrograde, Saturn turns his gaze inward, asking - what are we anchoring within?

As the planet of boundaries and order swims backward through Pisces, the sign of mysticism, dreams, and dissolution, we enter a paradox: the architect in the ocean, the judge in a temple of smoke. This year, Saturn retrogrades through Uttara Bhadrapada (Pada 1) from July 13 to October 3 and Purva Bhadrapada (Pada 4) from October 4 to November 28 - two nakshatras associated with fire, funerals, and spiritual paradox. Like all the retrogrades that follow the themes of "re", this retrograde is not about "re"treat, it is about descent - going deep into the underworld, no man's land - a time of deadlock so that truth can emerge, so that inherited stories can fall, so that OUR story takes shape.

Saturn in Uttara Bhadrapada (Pada 1) - July 13 to October 3, 2025

Uttara Bhadrapada is symbolized by the back legs of a funeral cot, evoking the quiet moments after an ending, where grief has ripened into reflection. Its presiding deity is Ahirbudhnya, the ancient serpent of the deep sea—a mythic figure associated with Shiva, who lies coiled at the bottom of the cosmic ocean, holding the secrets of creation and dissolution.

Pada 1 of Uttara Bhadrapada falls under the Leo Navamsa, ruled by the Sun. This lends a sense of pride and identity to a nakshatra otherwise steeped in introspection. With Saturn retrograde here, the internal spotlight turns on the parts of us that once craved validation or leadership. Now, we are asked to let those identities go, either because they have served us or because the label no longer defines us.

This is a time when we may quietly set aside our roles. Careers, relationships, and self-definitions that once seemed essential may feel questionable if they aren't aligned with our deeper soul stories. Imagine an artist who packs away her canvases because something new is stirring within, something that words or paint cannot yet express. This "packing away" is not a failure or defeat; it could be an inherited truth or a story we carried, our soul carried, and now needs to be laid to rest.

Ahirbudhnya doesn’t offer answers. He offers space. Saturn here teaches through silence, through the long periods when nothing external moves, yet everything inside is shifting. This is the archetype of The Hermit in Jungian terms, who is wise, solitary, and inwardly guided. In the Tarot, this phase aligns with The Hanged Man, a symbol of suspended time and sacred pause.

Things may slow down: projects stall, communication lags, and motivation dips. But beneath it all, something is maturing. Your soul is catching up to your schedule.

Career: Here, we may find career momentum stalling because this deeper reflection leads to recalibration. What may seem like a stall is a re-beginning. This means you can transition your career into something more meaningful and align with the version of yourself you envision five years from now.

Relationships: Relationships may seem quiet as you reflect on the emotional weights you’ve inherited.

Finances: Money may slow, especially in matters involving investments, legacy, inheritance, or family. This phase is not meant for productivity. It is meant for soulful sobriety.

Dreams: This transit can stir deep dream symbols related to ancestors, death, forgotten memories, or the sea. Dream imagery may include serpents, ocean beds, submerged temples, or people you haven’t seen in years. These are invitations from the subconscious to close loops, honor the past, or recognize how far you’ve come. Watch for dreams that feel ancient or oddly sacred, as if you’re dreaming someone else’s memory. These may be ancestral imprints rising through your sleep.

Saturn in Purva Bhadrapada (Pada 4): October 4 to Nov 27

The front legs of the funeral cot symbolize Purva Bhadrapada. If Uttara is the aftermath of endings, Purva is the preparation—the emotional surge before a letting go. Its deity, Aja Ekapada, is a one-legged being, part-unicorn, part-serpent, representing contradiction and spiritual fire.

Pada 4 falls in the Cancer Navamsa, ruled by the Moon. This adds emotion, memory, and instinct to an already intense nakshatra. Saturn retrograde here feels like emotional waves that can no longer be suppressed. You may find yourself crying unexpectedly, not for sadness, but for the sake of release, to feel lighter. This is not dramatic grief; it’s subtle. Like the way your breath changes when you realize something important has ended. Or the softness in the room after someone forgives you. Imagine a woman sitting by a lake at dusk. She reads old letters she never sent. She folds them carefully, lights a small candle, and watches it float across the water's surface. She doesn’t cry loudly, but something changes.

If Uttara Bhadrapada is a burial, Purva Bhadrapada is a burning.

This is the archetype of The Mystic in Jungian terms - one who processes life through depth, dreams, and emotional truth. In the Tarot, it resonates with the Moon and Temperance cards, which represent mystery, integration, and emotional rebalancing.

Career: Work can feel uncertain, but it is never meaningless. It’s a time when inner readiness becomes more important than outer results. This is a given if the career transition has happened during the retrograde. The retrograde does offer a transition, but not instant gratification, where everything seems to have fallen into place. However, what it assures is that everything is well aligned.

Relationships: Here, love may feel distant or hard to define.

Finances: Money may be spent in unexpected ways, especially on healing or emotional closure.

Dreams: This period brings emotionally charged dreams, often featuring flooded houses, ancestral altars, floating fire, or strange creatures with single limbs or dual natures. Dreams may seem surreal or haunting, but are often encoded with symbolic direction. This nakshatra is associated with ritual and paradox, so dream messages may appear contradictory: endings that feel like beginnings, and people who are both familiar and strange. Keep a dream journal—especially for symbols involving fire, serpents, bones, or moonlit journeys. These are subconscious rites of passage in disguise.

This Saturn retrograde wants your honesty. It doesn’t ask for sacrifice, it asks for truth. Through Ahirbudhnya, we learn that memories are sacred and can hold a lifetime. Not everything that was once needs to be the way it used to be. Through Aja Ekapada, we learn that contradictions don’t need to be solved - they need to be carried. Walking in life, holding the tension of opposites, is honouring the paradoxical nature of life.

You might not have answers during this time. But you will have presence. And sometimes, presence is the answer. The old patterns, especially emotional, karmic, and ancestral, may rise one last time so that you are seen. And as Saturn walks backward through the dream-water of Pisces, he isn’t dragging you; he is letting you arrive on a path where your soul knows the way.

Let it be quiet. Let it be slow. Let it be real.
